False Beliefs and Inner Vows

Diserning Truth Versus Lies
How can you tell the difference between truth and lies?  John 10:10 says that Jesus came to give life but the thief (devil) came to kill and destroy.  You can begin to ask yourself what lies the enemy has fed you based on negative experiences.  Ask the Lord to bring to the surface the lies that you believe and then write them down.  I have made a worksheet for breaking lies and throwing off false beliefs and you can download it free under the Resources & Worksheets tab.  When we ask God to reveal what the enemy is bringing against us He will be faithful to show us.  This is similar to a court case when the prosecution is asked to reveal the evidence that will be presented in court.  The enemy will be asked to reveal what he is doing to steal, kill and destroy in your life and then you will have the opportunity to walk closely with the Lord and mark the evidence as void as you begin to embrace truth and cast out lies.

God Wants to Trade Up
Take a moment to read all of Isaiah 61.  It is a beautiful picture of what God longs to do in the life of each of His children.  God wants to bind up the broken hearted; proclaim freedom for the captives, rebuild, restore, and give everlasting joy.  Isaiah 61:3 says that God "will provide for those who grieve in Zion.  He will bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. "  Wow!  God wants to trade up the things in your life that are broken and hurtful for things that are beautiful and wonderful.  This is actually a promise from the Lord.  Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Bring your lies to the Lord and He will give you truth!

How a Lie Becomes a False Belief
Knowing and fully believing that God loves us and being able to hold onto the truth that He speaks about us is crucial to a healthy soul.  The enemy knows this and constantly tries to sabotage our self-image and our image of God by throwing lies at us.  When we believe these lies and internalize them we begin to act on the lies instead of the truth.  At that stage, the lie has been ingested and a false belief has been formed.  When we begin to operate out of a false belief we then go on to make inner vows to protect our inner self from more damage.  For instance, a person might get hurt by a close friend and feel rejected.  The negative experience was being hurt, the lie is rejection and the false belief that grew from that situation could be that "I am not worthy of love".  Then the person might go on to form the inner vow that, "I won't become close friends with another person in order to protect myself."  The problem with false beliefs and inner vows is that they create walls and more wounds inside of us and it is not how God wants us to live.  God desires us to live in freedom and to love Him and love others (which would include ourselves).  What does the Bible say about what God thinks of us?  What is the truth?  That's the topic I want to explore in this lesson.

Truth Will Set You Free
Truth comes from our loving Father in heaven; it flows from Him to us. Truth is powerful and when we believe the truth the enemy is defeated.   Jesus was talking to a group of Jews in John 8:31-42 and He said if they held to His teaching they would know the truth and the truth would set them free.   Jesus went on to say in John 8:44 that Satan “was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”  Satan is also called an accuser, deceiver, and tempter.  The enemy feeds us lies in many ways, through negative experiences, trauma, and the words of others or his suggestions to our minds.  Many people have a hard time believing God speaks to them but they acknowledge the fact that Satan speaks lies to them.  How interesting that it is easier to believe one way and not the other.  This belief that Satan has the power to speak to us but God is far away and we can’t hear his voice is a lie.  God is constantly speaking to us!  God loves to speak to us and for us to listen to His voice.  John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”  Every day and every moment God is calling to us and speaking truth into our souls.  You can flip to the lesson on experiencing God to find out more about tuning in to the voice of God and hearing what your Father in heaven is speaking to you right now.

Prayer for Breaking Lies and Believing Truth
Before you pray through these things take a moment to identify a lie you believed and what you decided to do or how you have acted in the past based on the lie.  Ask the Lord if there are any lies you are believing.  Then ask the Holy Spirit to reveal God's truth that will counteract the lie and how you should react in the future based on the truth.  Then pray and fill in the blanks with what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you.  It's fine to pray through it in your own words as well but if it makes it easier you can use this guide.  It also helps to pray out loud because there is real power in spoken words.

I repent for believing the lie ______________________ (say the false belief) and for the ways I have judged others or myself based upon this false belief.

Say this only if it is applicable: I forgive_____________ (name of relative) for passing this lie down to me.  I forgive _______________ (any other person(s) that contributed) for their involvement in forming this false belief.

I confess the truth that ____________________________ (truth of what God says about you that counteracts the lie).

I repent for making the vow that __________________________
( the vow or thing you decided to do based on the false belief).

Instead, I now purpose by the power of the Holy Spirit to ___________________________ (thing you want to do now based on God's truth).
